Advice and Truisms
If people want advice, they’ll ask for it. But here’s some anyway:
Read
Use libraries
Wear a hat when it’s cold
When you get good service, write out a comment card, talk to a supervisor
Compliment businesses that employ the handicapped
Pay it forward, give back, random acts of kindness
Don’t force the equipment
Respect your elders
Pick a career/work you enjoy and you’ll never work a day in your life.
At one point I realized that the advice I was so anxious to give to my parents and my children was not really wanted, and yet as a teacher I was under the illusion that my students followed it.
(For teachers) First, do no harm Teach every student something everyday; they might not be there again
(for retired people) If it’s not easy, don’t do it
Truisms:
“Sometimes it’s easier to cut your coat to fit the cloth than lie on the bed you’ve made” Graham Greene. Not like “ you go to war with the army you have, not the army you wish you had” Donald Rumsfeld. (you need to know when to go to war)
From Phil Horan: Of all your troubles great and small, the greatest of them all are those that never happen at all….
4 children are a group….you have to count
Every family had their own recipe for chili, spaghetti, and turkey dressing, and it’s pointless to try and replace them with something new.
We have truly enjoyed the unexpected pleasure of the company of our adult children
It takes two (to really get things done) ( and we’re only 69)
